“I am trying to be unfamiliar with what I'm doing.”

― John Cage

The 20th century composer John Cage was an artist and musician who became fascinated with the process and results of using chance to create his works of art and music. He used the I-ching extensively and also just the simple method of drawing out of a hat. In Buddhism we talk about "auspicious coincidence". If one can relax ego and open to the surprise of chance, wonderful and amazing things can arise! We will be playing with this idea using sound, words, movement, ideas, and creating some fun collaborative "events" using chance operations.

Cage described music as "a purposeless play" which is "an affirmation of life – not an attempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvements in creation, but simply a way of waking up to the very life we're living".

Since then, she has become a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche’s, studying and practicing on the Scorpion Seal path. Carolyn is Director of Culture and Decorum at Shambhala Los Angeles and is a qualified and experienced Shambhala Art teacher.

The Shambhala Center of Los Angeles remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our community. One of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford a program, please call our office (323-255-5472) to register based on what you can afford. At the same time, the Center relies on program revenue to cover costs. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price, and provides additional support to the Shambhala Center of Los Angeles. Thank you for your kindness!

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
