“Attention without feeling … is only a report.” Mary Oliver

Sketching and writing are practices that can soften and sharpen the quality of our attention. Through attention, we open up to our experience and to the world, in all its joys and sorrows, we connect. Our marks become part of a conversation. We let the world in, and we give to it.

For this Contemplative Creativity Lab, we'll use simple sketching methods and writing prompts to contemplate how art-practice engages and strengthens the quality of our attention, and how that attention can be a wonderful and generous gift.

Participants are welcome to work with other creative forms if preferred (besides writing and sketching) since our focus will be more on contemplating our process of attention, rather than an end product.

No prior art or meditation experience is necessary. Supplies are provided but you may bring your own if you wish (Sketchbook or Journal, drawing materials).

This workshop is part of our Contemplative Creativity Lab monthly workshop series. See for locations and details.

The Shambhala Center of Los Angeles remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our community. One of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford a program, please call our office (323-255-5472) to register based on what you can afford. At the same time, the Center relies on program revenue to cover costs. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price, and provides additional support to the Shambhala Center of Los Angeles. Thank you for your kindness!

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
