Using meditation as a portal to the creative process, this workshop will offer an exploration of writing as practice while being grounded in the present moment.  Meditation allows us to access our true voice and deepest inspirations.  Time will be allotted for compassionate listening for those who wish to share their writing in a supportive environment.  Meditation instruction will be given.  Bring a notebook or journal and a fast moving pen.  Everyone is welcome!

About the teachers:

Debra Dysart teaches meditation, Shambhala Art and other classes at the Los Angeles Shambhala Centers.  She has been interested in the Shambhala Buddhist teachings ever since she discovered Pema Chödrön’s Wisdom of No Escape in a Barnes and Nobles in 1997. (She met her husband Malcolm in that same bookstore.) Debra was a former Center Co-Director of Los Angeles Shambhala and currently serves as Acting Director of Education (Eagle Rock). She sings with the Verdi Chorus and serves on its board of directors.

Alicia Vogl Saenz has been a practitioner of Shambhala Buddhism since 2005. She is a published poet and a senior museum educator at LACMA, where she coordinates family programs and leads meditation and art experiences. Alicia's poetry has appeared in journals and anthologies such as Grand Street, Blue Mesa Review, Mischief, Caprice, and Other Poetic Strategies (Red Hen Press), and she is the author of  the chapbook The Day I Wore the Red Coat (VCP Press, 2001). She translated into English poet Mariano Zaro's book, Tres Letras (Walrus).

The Shambhala Center of Los Angeles remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our community. One of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford a program, please call our office (323-255-5472) to register based on what you can afford. At the same time, the Center relies on program revenue to cover costs. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price, and provides additional support to the Shambhala Center of Los Angeles. Thank you for your kindness!

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
