In this 4 week introductory course, we explore how the energy of emotions, however wild and untamed, can be the basis for developing wisdom and compassion.

Passion, anger, jealousy, or pride… In these challenging times, confused, wild emotions can dominate us in obvious and subtle ways. Without suppressing feelings or acting them out, Buddhist meditation works with emotions directly.

Through meditation, we begin to work with emotions, to see how to transform confusion into wisdom, and to appreciate how every state of mind provides an opportunity to wake up to our innate wisdom and sanity.

Open to all. Beginners to meditation welcome.

About the teachers:

Joel Wachbrit has been a member of the Los Angeles Shambhala community and a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche since 1989. He served as Center Co-Director and before that was Director of Buddhist Education for 7 years. Joel has been a working musician for almost forty years and for the last twenty he has composed music for TV and film. He is now returning to his childhood by playing guitar in a rock band as well as producing and playing with his songwriter wife, sangha member Jill Freeman.

Lisa Oxley is a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and has been practicing meditation for over 15 years. She is also a contemporary artist and arts educator, interested in the zone where mindfulness and creativity overlap. She has been involved in teaching and education for over 20 years, and teaches meditation and it’s relation to drawing and the creative process at LACMA, Otis College of Art and Design, and UC Davis.

The Shambhala Center of Los Angeles remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our community. One of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford a program, please call our office (323-255-5472) to register based on what you can afford. At the same time, the Center relies on program revenue to cover costs. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price, and provides additional support to the Shambhala Center of Los Angeles. Thank you for your kindness!

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
