The Social Action Group is proud to host Shambhala Los Angeles members Kate Summers and John MacAdams in a talk about their work as Buddhist chaplains/meditation instructors in the LA Country Sheriff’s Department Jail System.  Please join us to learn about this important outreach work by members of our community.

Kate Summers has been a Shambhalian since 2010. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she worked for the LA County Department of Mental Health. For the past 10 years, she has volunteered inside the LA County jails on behalf of the ACLU and, since 2012, as a Buddhist chaplain.  She is also a qigong instructor authorized by Eva Wong.

John MacAdams has been a student and practitioner of Shambhala Buddhism since 1982.  He teaches Mindfulness Awareness Meditation and is an Assistant Director for Shambhala Training.   In 2013, John began as a volunteer in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Dept. Men’s Central Jail (MCJ), where he provides individual and group mindfulness meditation instruction and support to inmates from a variety of religious faiths. In 2015 he gratefully accepted the position of Senior Buddhist Chaplain for MCJ.  John worked 25 years in the film business and, as a life long musician, spent a decade touring with his wife and good friends in CRAICMORE, a Celtic music group.

The Shambhala Center of Los Angeles remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our community. One of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one be turned away for lack of funds. If you can’t afford a program, please call our office (323-255-5472) to register based on what you can afford. At the same time, the Center relies on program revenue to cover costs. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price, and provides additional support to the Shambhala Center of Los Angeles. Thank you for your kindness!

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
