What Is Meditation?

The word for meditation in Sanskrit is “shamatha” (shămă tă) and defined as peaceful abiding, describing the mind in its natural state. The word ‘peace’ tells the whole story. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean that we’re apathetically ignoring things. Instead, it points to the truth that the mind can be present free of conflict with natural reality.

Samatha-vipassanā is an ancient practice of self-discovery. While it comes from the Buddhist tradition, it’s based on a simple but revolutionary idea: everyone can cultivate a calmer, clearer, and stronger mind. Consequently, this leads to a more present and compassionate way of living.

Through Samatha-vipassanā meditation, one can cultivate a mind that is stable, clear, and strong.

For this reason, Samatha-vipassanā is not purely a Buddhist practice.  Instead, it’s a practice that anyone can do. It doesn’t tie in with a particular spiritual tradition. Therefore, if we want to undo confusion, we’re going to have to be responsible for learning what our own mind is and how it works, no matter what beliefs we hold.

“Meditation practice begins by sitting down and assuming your seat cross-legged on the ground. You begin to feel that by simply being on the spot, your life can become workable and even wonderful.”

– Chögyam Trungpa, Founder of the Shambhala Tradition

Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

The benefits of having a consistent mindfulness practice are both extensive and backed by science. In particular, a mindfulness practice helps regulate the body’s stress response system, reducing the production of stress hormones like cortisol. Numerous studies have shown that mindfulness-based stress reduction practices can significantly reduce stress levels and improve coping mechanisms.

Benefits include:

  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Meditation helps calm the nervous system, reducing the effects of stress and anxiety.
  • Improved focus and concentration: Regular practice enhances your ability to concentrate and be present in daily life.
  • Increased self-awareness: Meditation allows you to observe your thoughts and emotions without judgment, fostering greater self-understanding.
  • Enhanced emotional well-being: By cultivating a calm-abiding sense of being, a consistent practice can lead to greater emotional stability and resilience.
  • Improved sleep: A stable mind promotes restful sleep and can help address insomnia.
  • Greater compassion: Meditation fosters a sense of interconnectedness, leading to increased empathy and compassion for yourself and others.

The Shambhala vision builds on these benefits incorporating an approach that includes societal well-being.
