The point of Shambhala Training is to get out of the cocoon, which is the shyness and aggression in which we have wrapped ourselves… A Shambhala warrior is someone who is brave enough not to give in to the aggression and contradictions that exist in society…who is able to step out of the cocoon--that very comfortable cocoon that he or she is trying to sleep in. -- Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche

Open to graduates of Shambhala Training Level I.

Shastri Pamela Bothwell first encountered the dharma at Tail of the Tiger (Karme Chöling Buddhist Contemplative Center) in Vermont in 1973. She has served as co-director of the New York Shambhala Center; Head of Practice and Study at Karme-Chöling; Head of Study at the San Francisco Shambhala Center; Ambassador to the Los Angeles Shambhala Center; and Co-Director of the Los Angeles Shambhala Center. A former attorney and mother of 3 young adults, she has been married for over 30 years.  In 2010, she was appointed by Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche as Shastri for Los Angeles.

Joel Wachbrit is a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche and has been a member of the LA Shambhala community since 1989. He has held many positions at SMCLA, the most recent was as Co-Director. Before that he served as Head of Buddhist Education for 7 years. Joel composes music for TV and film and is an accomplished guitarist. He is married to Jill Freeman and they have several children – all with four legs.

Please refrain from wearing perfume, cologne, or scented products to the LA Shambhala Center as some of our participants have severe scent-related allergies.

SMCLA Generosity Policy

The Shambhala Center remains open because of the ongoing generosity of our members and program participants, and one of the cornerstones of our policy is that no one should be prevented from participating in programs for lack of funds. At the same time, the Center relies on the revenue from program participants to cover the cost of each program and of keeping our doors open. For programs where there is a set price, if the program price is an obstacle for you, please offer as much of the program price as you can. The suggested minimum, based on the Center’s costs, is 50% of the program price. You may type in the amount on the registration page and pay accordingly. For those who are able to pay more than the program price, your generosity in paying the Patron Price helps cover the costs for others who are not able to pay the full price of the program, and provides support to the Shambhala Center. If you have any questions, please email la@shambhala.org.

Program Cancellation Policy

If you cancel more than 7 days prior to your class (and have already paid), you will receive a full refund less a processing fee of $15. If you cancel between 1 to 7 days prior to arrival, we will credit your payment towards another program at Shambhala Los Angeles to be used within 1 year. No refunds or credits are issued for cancellations received fewer than 24 hours prior to arrival.
