Shambhala Art Graduate & Teachers Retreat
Please join us for a
Shambhala Art Graduate and Teachers Retreat
January, 2011
“By working with the five buddha families (the five elements), we are trying to develop some basic understanding of how to see things in their absolute essence, their own innate nature. We can use this knowledge with regard to painting or poetry or arranging flowers or making films or composing music. It is also connected with relationships between people. The five buddha family principles seem to cover a whole new dimension of perception. They are very important at all levels of perception and in all creative situations.” Chögyam Trungpa
This will be a city retreat for both graduates of the Five Part Program and Authorized Shambhala Art Teachers. The theme of this retreat will be the Five Elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space and how they manifest in our environment and are a palette for our creative process. There will be the additional opportunity for teachers of the program to share teaching skills and methods. As an in-city retreat, it will be our goal to create a retreat-like container while we explore the five elements together.

FORMAT:
The Los Angeles Shambhala Center is located in a city (Eagle Rock) with natural areas nearby. This retreat will involve exploring our rich environment and capturing examples of the elements and sharing them with the group. Henri Cartier-Bresson referred to photography as “instant drawing.” Because of the instantaneous quality of photography and the almost ubiquitous use of digital cameras we are recommending that you consider bringing such a camera to this retreat. We will be able to display selected examples on a large screen TV or digital projector to share with the group for discussion. At the same time, we would like those who have a greater interest in some other form of expression, i.e. writing, drawing, performance, to follow their interest. The size of our group or groups will determine the length our offerings.
WHO MAY ATTEND:
You must have graduated from the Shambhala Art Five Part Program. If you are attending as a Teacher, you must be an authorized Shambhala Art teacher. Advanced registration and a 50% deposit is required. More information to follow.
There is a very limited amount of housing available from community members, and that housing will likely require public or private transportation. In addition to a list of such housing, we will provide a list of moderately price motels and hotels near the center. During our last program several individuals shared rooms and expenses. It may be possible for some people to stay overnight at the center. If you plan on flying in to Los Angeles, and staying somewhere near the center, we strongly recommend flying to Burbank Airport.
